The Merlion

Its lion head represents the lion spotted by Prince Sang Nila Utama when he re-discovered Singapura (meaning ‘Lion-City’) in 11 AD, while its fish body symbolizes Singapore's humble beginnings as a fishing village and a sea port. This half-lion, half-fish sculpture, which rests on a crest of waves by the mouth of the Singapore River has become the Singapore’s icon to the rest of the world today. Measuring 8.6 metres high and weighing 70 tonnes, the Merlion statue was built from cement and is a popular tourist attraction for visitors today.
