Botanic Gardens

Stretched over 52 hectares of land in the heart of the city, the Singapore Botanic Garden is one of the world's greatest centers of botanical and horticultural attractions, that boasts about a proud history of 150 years. The park houses an amazing collection of outstanding plants while providing a comprehensive introduction to plants in a variety of settings, from rolling lawns and orchid gardens to a tropical jungle. With more than 600,000 plant specimens, the garden is famous for its bio-diversity and attracts visitors from all round the globe. Apart from the tourists on sightseeing, the garden is often crowded with families on picnics, joggers, nature enthusiasts and photographers.

Among the other attractions of the garden are the orchid garden, cool house, garden of evolution, rain forest and lakes. Located on the mid-western side of the garden the 3-hectare National Orchid Garden that opened in 1995 showcases 700 species and more than 2,000 hybrid orchids, is simply a haven for serious orchid enthusiasts.

Being the main attraction of the Singapore Botanic Garden 20,000 orchid plants on display will certainly surprise you; the ‘Orchidarium’ displays only the natural species in a tropical setting, while the ‘Cool House’ that simulates a tropical mountain forest showcases orchids that are normally only found in the tropical highland areas.

The National Orchid Garden also houses an unusual bromeliad collection from Central and South America. The Botanic Gardens has three lakes, namely Symphony Lake, Eco-Lake and Swan Lake.

The Symphony Lake is an ideal place to relax after going round the park while outdoor concerts held near the lake provide entertainment amidst a lush milieu. The garden also has a small tropical rainforest, of around six hectares in size, which is older than the gardens itself.

Another new attraction at the botanic garden is the 1.5-hectare Evolution Garden, located within the Central Core. The ‘Evolution Garden’ tells the evolution story of plant life on Earth throughout the ages and attracts large numbers of tourists. The Singapore Botanic Gardens is open from 5.00 am to 12 midnight, while the admission to the Gardens has made free allowing even more visitors to the garden daily.
